Bronze Dragon abilities

How does a bronze dragon fight, in combat? We have very few examples of bronze dragon antagonists, as they are often neutral or indifferent to playable races. They are, therefore, much less aggressive than other dragons and overall their stoicism is likely to make them less prone to anger and violence. NPC examples below.

The RPG states: A mature bronze dragon is the adult phase of a bronze dragon's lifecycle, between adolescence and becoming a wyrm.

Bronze dragons are smaller and more agile than dragons of the other flights, and they appear to be built for speed rather than stamina[...]A spiky bone ridge runs down its back and forms a wicked point at the end of its tail. Its forms shimmers from golden yellow to rich orange in the sunlight as it darts through the air.

Bronze dragons prefer to use their spell-like abilities and breath weapon to confuse and scatter enemies. Afterward, they approach foes singly, swooping from the air or fighting on the ground depending on which approach offers the best tactical advantage. Bronzes can also be very patient, watching from afar until a target lets down its guard.

When speaking of Nozdormu, it says: Nozdormu is difficult to defeat because of his ability to look into the corridors of time and repeat events if they do not progress as he feels they should. He is extremely wise and uses his insight to determine the best course of action before proceeding. Should this fail, he simply tries again as necessary, or uses his power to avoid the encounter entirely.

The first Bronze Dragon that resembled a boss fight in vanilla was a drake,  Chronalis. He used a  Sand Breath - the bronze dragon iconic spell.

Later on, we face corrupted bronze dragons, the Infinite Dragonflight. Much like the bronze dragons, they have spells built for speed over stamina.

  •  Epoch Hunter - Much like bronze dragons, he used a Sand Breath. He also used an "impending death" ability, a DoT mark, a wing buffet, a  Magic Disruption Aura (dispelled benefical magic effects from enemies), and a  Double Attack ability, which made him attack twice in a row. This last spell is very interesting as it hints, once more, at Bronze's agility.
  •  Temporus  Hasten (Temporus increases his melee and movement speed by 200% for 10 sec.), Mortal Wound, Wing Buffet, Spell Reflection.
  •  Chrono-Lord Deja - Fighting in Black Morass, the guy has in his arsenal: Arcane blast, Time lapse (slow ability),  Attraction,  Arcane discharge.
  •  Aeonus - Time Stop, Trash (two attacks in a row), Cleave, Sand Breath.
  •  The Occulus - A bronze drake which has been subverted, as of Cataclysm, to the Infinite Dragonflight. Other than a sand breath, he has, too, a spell that increases attack speed (hasten).

In Wrath of the Lich King, new bronze dragons are introduced. They are friendly and can be mounted, the Amber Drakes in the Oculus.

  •  Amber Drakes - Drakes of the Bronze Dragonflight assaulting the Oculus in Coldarra during WotLK, these drakes display the following abilities:  Shock Lance (a blast of temportal-arcane energy).  Stop Time (stuns player for X seconds, increases damage done).  Temporal Rift (channeled rift of time magic, increasing damage taken and dealing 15,000 damage per second).
  •  Dragons fighting in the Bronze Dragonshrine also use Time Stop, Time Shock (shock lance) and Temporal Rifts abilities.
  •  Chrono-Lord Epoch -  Time Warp (Time slows down, reducing attack, casting and movement speed by 70% for 6 sec. Epoch also attacks a party member three times in quick succession during this with  Time Step - Chrono-Lord Epoch steps through time, charging a random player and inflicting Physical damage to them),  Curse of Exerction (Increase cost of abilities by 100%),  Time Stop (Stuns the whole party for 2–3 seconds. Stun duration affected by talents which reduce stun effects).

As of Cataclysm, we face Muruzond (and Nozdormu assists us).

  •  Muruzond  Temportal Blast (arcane blast plus damage taken  increased),  Distortion Bomb,  Tail Swipe.
  •  In the meantime, Nozdormu the Timeless One blesses us with an haste ability that increases attack speed, movement speed and casting speed by 40%. Nozdormu the Timeless One also assists us in the battle against the Madness of Deathwing. He uses a  Time Zone (Any enemy creatures within the Time Zone have their attack speed decreased by 50%, also causing the Elementium Meteor to lapse in time and decrease its travel speed dramatically upon entering the zone) and the  Presence of Nozdormu.
  • In the Day of the Dragon, Nozdormu uses the Sands of Time to steal youth from Deathwing. His command over Sands of Time is mentioned also in the Charge of the Aspects short story. Always in the Day of the Dragon, once his powers of Aspect had been given back to him, Nozdormu "turned time forward for Deathwing alone, sapping his adversary of strength by forcing Deathwing to suffer weeks, months, then years without rest".

Bronze dragons make an appearance in Warlords of Draenor, in the quest 'Tarnished Bronze', where Chronormu helps in the battle against Kairozdormu. This battle gives us an idea of other weapons in a bronze dragon's arsenal...

  •  Kairozdormu uses, in humanoid form: Sand Bolt (or something like that), Time Bomb (an huge sphere ,  Stinging Sands and  Summon Sands of Time. At phase two he uses  A Blip in Time,  Ripples in Time (a casted 10 seconds spell which unleashes an huge explosion, can be avoided behind pillars). As a spell, he uses Petrifying Breath, some type of empowered version of the Sand Breath which turns "frontal enemies to dust", a.k.a. stuns them in stone!
  •  Chronormu, instead, may assist as an healer with the spell Time Heal All Wounds, which heals the target. Alternatively she releases a sand of time blast against Kairoz as a DPS. If the player dies, she  Rewinds Time and the battle can begin once more.

Once more, we meet Chromie in the scenario the Deaths of Chromie. More info on that comming soon, for the lore there is pretty heavy!

Chronormu. She uses Sand Bolts, Time Zones made of sand (entering slows the enemy NPCs), she releases Time Bombs (a sphere of sand descends from below at a slow pace, after a while it explodes in a very short perimeter). She can heal, helping you regenerate with a Time Regeneration ability. She can also travel through time, rewinding the results of the events and helping herself before she is killed!

Breath Abilities.

Sand Breath. Bronze Dragons can unleash a breath made of sand against their enemies. It is their iconic ability. This sand is sand of time: it deals arcane damages and slows the time of those hit by the sand (movement and attack speed reduced). Petrifying breath: Powerful dragons like Kairozdormu can even, after using the sand breath a few times, petrify in stone everything that touched the sand breath!

Physical Abilities.

Like all dragons, they can use their tail as a mace and often release wing buffets. They are much more agile than other dragons - even if this ability appears related to their control of time.

Double Attack. Many bronze dragons (and Infinite) attack twice in a row! This stands as a testment to both their rapidity and connection with time.

 Chronomancy.

Bronze dragons can manipulate the time around themselves. They can hasten their attack speed, attacking with increased frequency. They can also, obiviously, slow the opponents down, decreasing their attack speed and even blocking the time around them, effectively immobilizing the enemies!

Time Warp Much like a time stop, bronze dragons can modify the time around them / upon themselves /upon their enemies. For example, they can slow down time for their opponents, while they themselves remain untouched by this ability. This, of course, makes them appear much quicker in their movements. Temporal Distortion (celerity).  The Presence of Nozdormu also warped time for his allies, making them attacking faster than usual.

Hasten. Bronze dragon increase their movement speed by a significant amount (we've seen they became become three times quicker), attacking and moving with much more frequency.

Time Stop. Bronze dragons can stop time for everyone but themselves. As the time is halted, they can attack the other foes, that are immobilized.

Shock Lance and  Temportal Blast - Apparently, temporal energy can be infused in the form of a shock lance, which is basically a golden arcane blast. How exactly this arcane blast is made by temporal energies is unclear. It might be made of sand time magic, which is, again, an iconic spell of bronze dragons. Muruzond uses a similar variant, a Temporal Blast ability, which is basically a blast of arcane, but somehow related to time.

Visions of the Future - Bronze dragons (now no longer omniscent after their loss of power) can catch 'glimpse' of the future, as Kairoz said. They used to know most of their story entirely. Know, they catch only a few fleeting istants.

Time Regeneration (a.k.a. Time Heals All Wounds!) - Through chronomancy, bronze dragons cast a time-distortion spell that make their targets natural regeneration rate speed up drastically, healing them quickly. Temporal Regeneration - Through chronomancy, a dragon may revert the status of the target to the healthiest one in a limited amount of time. So, if you were struck by a sword, a dragon could revert you to the moment that preeceded it. It's not known if they can even resurrect with such a spell. If they can, it likely costs a lot of energy and can't interfere with the true timeway.

Travel Through Time - Bronze Dragons' most iconic ability. They can travel through time. This ability seems to obey certain laws as, according to Death of Chromie scenario, it can be halted or even blocked under some circumstances. It usually happens in the form of a portal. It has a lot to do with timeways and some timeways can't be accessed nor modified! Of course, in battle, this is possibly the most useful ability for bronze. If they fail at something and they survive, they can, after all, return back in time and try again. They can, ideally, even call up for the aid of a past or future version of themselves to aid them (or a future or past version of themselves could help them out). Due to having lost much of their omniscence, however, they can't foresee how grave the battle will be, for them.

A few bronze dragons know the moment of their death - and that moment, as it is written in the original timeline, can't be modified. Trying to do so would somehow damage the original timeline (which is the Infinite Dragon's job).

Sand Magic

Sands of Time. As it is used by bronze dragons, Sand Magic is a form of arcane magic which is heavily related to Time. It is an obvious reference to the sand in an hourglass, hence it is related to the moving of time. The very blood of bronze dragons is composed of this sand.

Day of the Dragon: "Nozdormu cast the sand of ages at him, threatening, at least for a moment, to steal Deathwing's very youth. Deathwing felt the weakness spread through him, felt his bones grow stiff and his thoughts slower. Yet, before the change could become permanent, the raw power within the chaotic dragon surged high, burning away the sand, overwhelming the cunning spell."

This is what the Sand of Time (or sand of ages, as mentioned in the book) do. They can modify time in the affected area. However, their modification of time is rather material, as magical spells can deny and burn the sand - this destroying the spell.

The very Sand of Time might be what bronze dragons use to travel through time, as it is this bronze substance that Chromie used to cast chrono-portals. Sand of Time can be unleashed in multiple forms, such as bombs or sand bolts.

Time Bomb (or Distortion Bomb) - Chrono-magic hits a designated area in the form of a bomb, twisting the time and damaging anyone in a small area for quite some time. Distortion Bomb used by Murozond. A less-powerful version named Time Bomb is used by Kairoz and Chromie. It is a bomb that, advancing at a slow pace, explodes in a small area with sands of time.

Time Zone - The Sands of Time are summoned in a selected area, slowing time for anyone inside.

Summon Sand of Time - Used in Kairoz' humanoid form. He can summon and unleash elementals made of sand.

Ripples in Time - An huge explosion that deals massive arcane damages (after 10 seconds). Can be avoided by taking cover behind pillars, hence it is likely not really related to time but more a strong explosion of chrono-arcane magic.

Arcane Magic

Bronze dragons also have knowledge over arcane magic, much like mages. We have seen them removing magical effects (dispelling magic), using arcane blasts and using arcane thunders.

 Conclusions.

Bronze dragons, being stoic, are much less inclined to fight and it is a rare occurrence to see them in battle.

Once they fight, they are fearsome opponents. We have seen they are more agile than most dragons, using their mastery through time to further develop their agility and strike at the enemy. They exploit this knowledge of time to be faster than their opponent, like striking twice in a row. Thanks to this advantage they are likely to engage more in physical combat than their blue cousins. They use their vast knowledge over magic to determine the best course of action from which to proceed and fight!

They can Warp Time around them, increasing or slowing rapidity of spells and enemies alike. This, of course, benefits the effectiveness of their agility. They can even Stop the Time for anyone but themselves. This ability lasts a limited amount of time, 2-3 seconds.
Other than engaging in physical combat, bronze dragons are good spellcasters and may fight from afar, likely flying and releasing bolts or shocks of arcane or sands of time against their targets while they slow the enemies down or freeze them in time (always for a limited amount of time).

The Sands of Time also modify the time within themselves - making it run faster or slower. Hence, they can slow opponents within the sands. Nozdormu could even steal youth and change the age of his opponents, turning enemies into older, frail creatures, or alternatively turn them younger. In other words, the sands do modify (accelerate, slow down) the course of time. This ability has several restrictions.

Bronze dragons have the ability to travel through time, which may (but also may not, depending on the laws of the timeways) allow them to repeat the outcome of a battle. This ability, however, is subject to many restrictions.

They also have a vast knowledge of arcane magic and can be good mages aswell as sorcerors.

Bronze dragons can be qualified healers thanks to their chronomancy, which allows them to revert back their injuries or speed up the natural healing process of a living being!

Outside of combat, bronze dragons are wise and intelligent. Much akin to the blue dragons, they study the world around them - its history and the timeways. Indeed, one of their main and unique abilities is this capacity to travel through the timeways.

Also, they are wise and sensitive. Usually, they know much of their enviorment due to their knowledge of history.

Following the Cataclysm and the loss of Nozdormu's Aspect powers, the bronze dragons still can travel between time, but they no longer have control over timelines. Bronze dragons are still masters of time however and are capable of sending mortals back into the past, as Zidormi demonstrates when she allows players to re-visit Theramore before its untimely devastation and the Blasted Lands before the Ironmarch, as well as into the future, as Chromie did several times to figure out how she would die.

Before the loss of Nozdormu's Aspect powers, they were nearly omniscent and knew most of their life. Now not any longer, and they catch just glimpse of their future.
